Last week’s tech industry trends were only mildly enticing — things changed on 24 January, however. Enter Cisco, data management stuff and its corporate strategy.
On finance side of things, we assiduously monitor extraordinary corporate activity, and Cisco’s latest $3.7bn deal (2% of its market cap) surely dominated the headlines this week. Does the expensive purchase of an application performance management platform spell trouble?
Cisco shelled out top dollar to get to know more about data. Rowan Trollope, Cisco senior vice president, said that “applications have become the lifeblood of a company’s success.”
“Keeping those apps running and performing well has never been more important. Unfortunately, that job has only gotten harder, as IT departments and developers struggle with a tangled web of disconnected, complex data that’s hard to understand,” Mr Trollope added.
Having announced the AppDynamics deal, Cisco clearly became the leading actor —- or clown, you might think, given the transaction’s implied multiples — during a very busy earnings week in tech-land.
Still, it didn’t overshadow Amazon’s heroic expansion into ocean freight services, which we have monitored with particular interest following Alibaba’s tie-up with Maersk Line — more details on the TouchOne pilot can be found here.
Finally, we had several quarterly results out: Alphabet, eBay, Paypal, Microsoft, Qualcomm, Samsung, Verizon, Alibaba, and LG — financial figures were more relevant than any other trending news concerning Google, tools and the tech world, and were broadly encouraging.
