HB Weekly Wrap 3 – 7 April

Google was under the spotlight in recent days: Project Zero, ads policies, and PAX were some key highlights in a week during which ‘reputational risk’, and its side effects, continued to draw our attention tech-land and elsewhere — just ask PepsiCo executives what that means. In this context, does Unilever underestimate the possible downside that comes with under-investing in marketing?

Cyber security was another hot topic, with Google saying “it’s a well understood fact that platform security is an integral part of the security of complex systems. For mobile devices, this statement rings even truer; modern mobile platforms include multiple processing units, all elaborately communicating with one another.”

In short, mobile devices remain vulnerable. Google also has other problems at the moment, as it “expands fact-checking effort to all searches worldwide,” Search Engine Land reminded us.

Elsewhere, remember you don’t need a credit or debit card to shop Amazon anymore, CNN reported — while “founder Jeff Bezos said on Wednesday he is selling about $1 billion worth of the internet retailer’s stock annually to fund his Blue Origin rocket company,” Reuters said.

Meanwhile, Business Insider wrote that AOL and Yahoo “plan to call themselves by a new name after the Verizon deal closes: Oath”.

Things were even worse with Imagination Technologies, a multimedia, processor and tech firm that was notified by Apple, its largest customer, that US-based behemoth “is of a view that it will no longer use the Group’s intellectual property in its new products in 15 months to two years time, and as such will not be eligible for royalty payments under the current license and royalty agreement.”

Geopolitical risk suddenly heightened in the past few days, and Google reminded us that “in Latin, the word pax means ‘peace’.”

“In the world of intellectual property, patent peace often coincides with innovation and healthy competition that benefit consumers. It is with a hope for such benefits that we are announcing our newest patent licensing initiative focusing on patent peace, which we call PAX.”
